Designing for Wellness

So much of our wellbeing is shaped by our habits and our habitats. Numerous studies have shown that our behavior and our environment—which has great power to influence our actions—play a far greater role in our health than genetics. We each have the ability to invest in our mental, physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing on a daily basis, and by shaping our environments in ways that encourage these investments, we can more easily make wellness-focused choices a habit.

More than ever, home is where we spend the most time, and it’s the environment that most impacts our wellbeing. When a remodel or new construction project is completed with an eye for fostering wellness, your renovated space can become a place that helps you and your loved ones pursue greater health.

Wellness design is focused on creating spaces that intentionally nourish numerous facets of health in ways that reach far beyond pandemic-related efforts to “stay home and stay healthy.” From strategically chosen materials to high-tech innovations, this philosophy incorporates elements that bring a host of benefits for holistic wellbeing.

Lower Stress

Spaces designed intentionally for relaxation can make practices that lower stress levels part of your routine. From hydrotherapy tubs, saunas and cryotherapy rooms to calming spaces for meditation or prayer, having a place in your home devoted to pursuing deeper peace can help you create space for stillness—and in turn, reap the countless benefits to your body, mind and spirit.

In addition, renovations that provide clear boundaries between spaces for work and those for recreation can prevent office hours from edging into time to unwind. This delineation can provide a nudge toward a more balanced schedule and encourage involvement in pursuits that restore and energize.

Enhanced Resilience

Good health consists of far more than avoiding harm and preventing maladies. True wellness involves pursuing resilience, vitality, and vibrancy that enables us to enjoy each day to the fullest.

The right renovations can make it easier to reach for enhanced wellness that enables us to savor the best life has to offer. Home gyms and other fitness-focused spaces support the development of a stronger body while kitchen remodels that provide added ease lend themselves more nutritious (and more enjoyable) meals. Designs that strategically utilize natural light can help to regulate circadian rhythms, leading to better sleep, greater immunity and increased energy. In addition, numerous smart features can make monitoring your health automatic and easy.

Greater Sustainability

In cooperation with a focus on the wellbeing of the homeowner, wellness design seeks to support the welfare of the environment in ways that remind us of the connection between the care of the earth and the health of its people. In addition to the use of sustainable and low-emission materials, remodels that incorporate nature call to mind this connection while nurturing inner calm.

An upgrade to your living space can bring more than just greater beauty and enhanced functionality. With the right approach, a renovation or addition can be an investment in your wellbeing that will pay off in better mental, physical and emotional health for years to come.
